Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware from her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
